Overview

This 6-day trekking itinerary follows the challenging Umbwe Route on Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 meters above sea level. Known for its steep and direct path, the Umbwe Route is ideal for experienced climbers seeking a shorter but physically demanding ascent to Uhuru Peak.

The route begins on the southern slopes and passes through diverse ecological zones, including lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the summit’s arctic zone. While the trail is less crowded and more remote than other routes, it requires strong fitness and careful acclimatization. Climbers are rewarded with spectacular views, dramatic landscapes, and the unique experience of a steep, high-altitude climb that approaches the summit from a distinctive angle.

Your journey, day by day

01

Arrival in Moshi

Upon arrival at Moshi, you will be met by your mountain guide and transferred to your hotel. Moshi is located at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro and serves as the main starting point for climbing expeditions. In the evening, you will meet your climbing team for a briefing on the trek, equipment check, and final preparations. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the hotel.

02

Umbwe Gate – Umbwe Cave Camp

After breakfast, you will drive to Umbwe Gate for registration before beginning the climb. The trail starts through dense rainforest, gradually ascending as the terrain becomes steeper and more rugged. You will hike to Umbwe Cave Camp, a high-altitude camp nestled in the forest edge. This first day is short but steep, helping with early acclimatization while allowing time to enjoy the surrounding scenery.

03

Umbwe Cave – Barranco Camp

After breakfast, you will leave the forest behind and enter the alpine moorland zone. The trail continues to climb steeply, offering dramatic views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. You will arrive at Barranco Camp, located beneath the famous Barranco Wall. The camp provides an excellent opportunity for acclimatization while preparing for the next day’s climb.

04

Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

After breakfast, you will climb the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical section of the route. The ascent provides incredible views of the mountain’s southern slopes and the surrounding landscapes. After descending into the Karanga Valley, you will reach Karanga Camp. The day is relatively short to allow climbers to rest and acclimatize before moving toward the high camp.

05

Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp – Summit Attempt

After breakfast, you will trek to Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit climb. The landscape becomes more barren and rocky as you approach higher elevations. Later that night, you will begin the summit attempt toward Uhuru Peak. The climb is strenuous, but reaching the summit at sunrise offers unforgettable panoramic views over glaciers and surrounding peaks. After taking in the summit experience, you will begin your descent back to Barafu Camp and then continue to Mweka Camp for overnight stay.

06

Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate

After breakfast, you will continue descending through alpine desert, moorland, and rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail passes through stunning scenery as you leave the mountain behind. At the gate, you will receive your summit certificate before being transferred back to Moshi where the climb concludes with rest and celebration.
